In January we celebrate the coming of the light, as does Erin Leichty, in her new series of paintings entitled, Shadow Stories. Erin explores the idea that we are all made up of the stories that were handed down to us from generations before and ones that were written for us from the day we were born. It is when we become conscious of their influence in our everyday movements and choices that we can become not just a reader and a repeater of our history but the writer of our own futures. Erin’s work travels through time exploring each powerful moment when a new story begins.  Her graphic narrative enlivens her panels as she pays homage to each shadow cast. Using layers of graphic typography, photographic images of those she holds dear and sensuous layers of limestone clay and cold wax she is transformed from reader to writer, victim to victor. Each panel a cathartic memoir designed to inspire the viewer to bring their own stories to light.
