Nancy Arko’s landscapes celebrate change. From the lakes of northern Minnesota to the Oregon coast, Mt. Hood to the high desert, she sees change as a constant. Originally she understood her comfort in the landscape to be due to its unchanging nature, but now realizes that her love of landscape comes from its inconstancy. Metaphorically then the landscape becomes a trope for the human experience, where change, be it fleeting or prolonged, is the one thing we can be certain of.
She works in her studio from sketches, photographs and memories of the places she has visited and loved. She uses both painting knives and brushes, and works in oil paint and cold wax, or acrylic paint.
