Keaney Rathbun’s artworks are autobiographical and narrative. Some works in his exhibition “Memory and Stone” capture a single moment and others the rhythm of a life. He describes them as icons or monuments dedicated to an experience, a moment, a mood or an occasion. They are permanent reminders of the ephemera of life. These particular subjects are drawn from recent travels to Paris and New Zealand, from a recent residency in the Southern Highlands of Australia, or his domestic life.
For the last few years Mr. Rathbun has been working with bas relief carvings as foundations for paintings. This intentionally blurs the boundaries between two and three dimensions in painting. Imagined statuary introduce tension and metaphor to the works, and art historical references add another layer of meaning to his personal expression.
